Proud histories, lasting legacies.

Wausau Paper brings together two proud histories of success. In 1997, Wausau Paper Mills Company and Mosinee Paper Corporation became one – forming the company which would become "Wausau Paper." But even before that date, both companies had long, rich traditions in the paper industry:

1899—Wausau Paper Mills founded
Norman H. Brokaw and brothers W.L. and E.A. Edmonds build the first Wausau area paper mill, the second to be built on the Wisconsin River.

1910—Mosinee Paper established
Originally known as the Wausau Sulphate Fibre Company, the company becomes the first integrated mill in North America to use the sulfate pulping process.

1920—A new record
The Mosinee mill becomes the world's first to produce 1,000 feet of paper per minute.

1928—A new name
Wausau Sulfate Fibre Company becomes the Mosinee Paper Mills Company.

1928–Adding breadth
In December, Mosinee purchases Bay West, a maker of paper napkins, paper towels, and creped and kraft papers.

1959-1961–Leaps and bounds
A $4.25 million expansion program adds 174 new jobs and doubles production.

1966 - Wausau Paper purchases Mosinee Converted products
Wisconsin Governor Warren Knowles travels to Columbus to unveil a sign at the factory's new location.

1970—Still growing
Mosinee Paper Mills Company expands, creating new divisions and subsidiaries. Through a divisional reorganization, the name is changed to Mosinee Paper Corporation.

1976—Astrobrights™ introduced
Wausau Paper Mills Company's Brokaw Mill, led by the brightly colored Astrobrights™ line, becomes a leader in the production of premium printing and writing papers.

1980—Rhinelander Paper Company purchased
Wausau Paper Mills Company purchases Rhinelander Paper Company – a leading producer of specialty papers. The company produces pressure sensitive and protective barrier papers.

1993—Groveton Mill acquired
Wausau Paper Mills Company expands its printing and writing business with the acquisition of the Groveton Mill in New Hampshire.

1997—Acquisition of Otis Mill
Wausau Paper Mills Company takes a major step toward growing its specialty business with the acquisition of Otis Specialty Papers in Jay, Maine.

1997—The merger of two paper mills
On December 17, 1997, the shareholders of Wausau Paper Mills Company and Mosinee Paper Corporation approve a merger, uniting two strong companies in the paper industry. The new company would be known as Wausau-Mosinee Paper Corporation.

2004–A single identity and Brainerd mill acquired
The brands of Wausau-Mosinee Corporation are united under a single umbrella: Wausau Paper. In October, the purchase of a printing and writing mill in Brainerd, Minnesota is complete.
